Don Diego Churchill
Nice and large, you gotta love that. Theres something about lighting up the large-sized cigars that just bring an extra bit of enjoyment to the whole smoking experience. I also had the double pleasure of adding a second love of mine to this particular occasion; the final round of the British Open was on the television. And while not quite the same as enjoying a cigar while on the course playing the game, it was great to get to watch the excellent play of the leaders. Furthermore, I enjoyed this cigar with a beer, Bud Light, vintage 1999.
On to the cigar itself, being that the day was hot and it was fairly early for me to be smoking at just before noon, I thought Id go for a mild cigar. As I perused the contents of my humidor, the light brownish-beige color of the Diego called to me. This cigar is very well constructed with an even color and very nice vein, which I love to see. It cut well, even with a razor blade, which stood in for my cutter while its lost in my house somewhere. The initial burn was very nice and even, producing a lovely mottled gray-black ash. My choice was perfect, as this cigar defines the word mild. This is a cigar in the same class as the Montecruz and natural Fonseca as far as mild flavor. Slightly toasty and woody it was very satisfying and pleased me greatly.

Nice, very nice, that sums this cigar up. You need not read on if you are looking for a well made, even burning cigar. This was simply an end-of-the-day smoke with a glass of Johnny Walker Red after a nondescript weekday meal. Nice evening, nice cigar, nice drink thats about all you can ask for in life. Satisfying burn all the way down with a mild slightly leathery taste. When I smoke alone, I tend to let my mind wander and I focus intently on the cigar and the burn, especially the ash. That said, it take a little more for a cigar to impress me in this sort of situation and thats what this smoke did. One of the only strikes against this one is the value, I think its a little pricey for what you end up getting. That said, its an enjoyable mild and sweet cigar. Try one if you find it at a good price or are looking for something new.

Mayorga Gordito
This is a cigar I tried on the recommendation of my helpful cigar shopkeeper, Tim. Note: whenever possible, get in good with these people. They are your best resource for information on the wealth of smokes out there and they can be very helpful at putting aside special smokes for you when they come in, before people get a crack at them! Anyway, I was in the store perusing the shelves for something to smoke with a Starbucks Cafe Mocha and Tim told me about this promising new brand that they just got in, Mayorga. Mayorga is a new company making top quality cigars in Nicaragua and this is their figurado offering featuring the dark maduro wrapper. This is about as dark as wrappers get without painting on color (personal pet peeve there, tobacco is the color it is, dont mess with that!). The build on every one is excellent with few veins and almost unnoticeable overlap.
This cigar was great from the start. The flavor is what I call medium-full; very creamy with cocoa notes and completely without the bitter bite of some dark, fuller bodied cigars. This is a good cigar for people, like me, who prefer mild cigars but want a fuller flavor every so often. I personally think this cigar is on par with any I have had from the Opus X line, which is saying an awful lot, especially given the Gorditos price, only$4.25!! One unfortunate fact, since the company is new and these are just starting to come to the few shops that carry them, they can be extraordinarily hard to find. I bought the only unopened box that my shop had at the time and its still the last box theyd gotten last time I was there, were talking about a span of 7 months here! If you can find them, get all of these you can afford. I cant wait to see what mine do with some age, whoooo boy!
