Woo-Hoo! Horror bliss! Gore galore, good jokes, craziness! I loved THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE Part 2, and now I'm-a-gonna tell you why.

Those who checked in last time have found that I reviewed the first film in the series and quite enjoyed it. A small film about five kids in a van going to investigate a grave-robbing and encountering a family of cannabilistic whackos, that landmark proved vital in the development of the splatter horror movie. It was also, and still remains today, a sick sick film. Honestly, it was enjoyable because it was really well-made, but it still is pretty disturbing. Not bad enough to laugh at, too sick to truly enjoy completely.

I didn't think the whacked level of that sick film could be outdone, but just to make sure I rented the sequel. Oh wow, what an amazingly sick sick film. This time, the balance was just right between nastiness, a disturbing premise, and fun, that I thoroughly got my money's worth.

The plot: Everyone's favorite chainsawing family (aptly named, The Sawyers), is now a successful maker of Texas' favorite chili, which is so good because that meat is so unique. Yup, you guessed it: it's human meat. For the thirteen years since the first incident, people have been disappearing randomly and no one ever figured out why. Also, during that time, the brother of Franklin, the poor sod in the wheelchair who got sliced in the first one, has been tracking down the Sawyers. It helps that this brother is played by manic actor Dennis Hopper (hmmm...what drugs was he on in this film?).

When a DJ of a small show gets a call from two kids in a car who get murdered by the Sawyers, proof is on tape that the whacked family is still doing its nefarious deeds. So, Dennis Hopper uses the DJ as bait and convinces her to play the tape every hour. Sure enough, the two Sawyer kids, Leatherface and Flat-Top (the whacko who got run over by a truck in the first and who now has a metal plate in his head), come to kill her and end up leading Hopper to their hideout.

Only, the DJ isn't killed, but survives due to one remarkable and brilliant plot move: Leatherface finds her attractive. In a scene that was analyzed by many feminist film critics (see the great book:WOMEN, MEN, AND CHAINSAWS), Leatherface sees the DJ as a sexual object and can't use his chainsaw on her. Instead, he presses it up against her crotch and has an orgasm of sorts. It's an amazing scene and shows some true wit and intelligence on the part of the filmmakers.

Once Hopper and the DJ reach their hideout, more great fun is in store. A catacomb-like maze of tunnels, the Sawyer residence is an amazing set which perfectly showcases their evil doings. It is also the location for another unbelievably sick and fantastic scene. Leatherface, using an electric knife, slices off the face of the DJ's assistant. Then, he takes the face, still dripping wet with blood, and places over the DJ's face and proceeds to dance with her. Not that sick, you think? Well, there's more, but I don't want to give it away. SEE THIS MOVIE!

Before long, you have more gore, more action, a chainsaw sword fight, Grandpa Sawyer (remember him?), a great dinner scene, and a climax which rivals that of the first. What an amazing horror movie. I have yet to see part 3 of the series, although I hear it's not as good as the first two. Nevertheless, little could stop the effect of this film. See the first one, then see this one. A horror masterpiece. Rating: **** (out of a possible 4)
