Top Ten Overlooked Guy Flix
by Eddie Artez

There are some films which every man is required to see by virtue of his masculinity. These include "Goodfellas," "Rocky," and "The Terminator," to name a few. Some are good movies, some are movies that only men can appreciate. But one way or another, there are certain guy flix that every man must see at least once in his life to be able to maintain his status as a card-carrying male. But some of the best guy flix are often overlooked. I argue that the following ten films should be required viewing by the age of 20 for all males, since they are among the best guy flix out there. Next time you are at the video store and are looking for a solid viewing experience, make sure you've seen all the following movies. By the way, on a side note, four out of the ten films feature Dennis Farina in some role. This is no coincidence, he is one of the best and most under-appreciated actors out there, and you can be sure you'll hear more from us on this topic.

10) "Das Boot" (The Boat) - This German World War II film follows a U-boat crew on its missions in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. The film makes you forget that you are watching German soldiers, but shows that the U-boat experience is a universally frightening one for men of any nationality. The suspense and claustrophobia is so brilliantly executed by director Wolfgang Peterson that you begin to feel as if you're on this submarine. A great film that makes you appreciate the horrors of war faced by men on all sides. Make sure you get the full director's cut -- sure it's long, but it's hard to imagine anything being cut out of this film. A great film all men should watch. (If you have a DVD player, it's a great purchase on DVD)

9) "Get Shorty" - I like movies where the protagonist is a man who embodies the values I believe in, where the hero is the kind of guy I'd like to be. John Travolta as Chili Palmer in "Get Shorty" is exactly that kind of guy. He takes no crap from anybody, knows how to talk to people in exactly the right way, is supremely confident in his masculinity (an impressive feat for an actor who once starred in 3 "Look Who's Talking" movies), and knows precisely how to talk to women. This funny adaptation of an Elmore Leonard book has so much good dialogue and such a strong cast, you will definitely enjoy yourself. Not to mention, it features one of the most underrated male actors of our time, Dennis Farina. Watch for his line as he is stuck in traffic in a limo - it's one of the funniest deliveries of a line of dialogue in film history.

8) "Night of the Creeps" - I'm entirely serious. I stumbled across this flick first because I'm a big horror fan. But, the more I think about it, the more I realize that this is just a guy flick hidden in a horror movie. This story of two guys in college who take part in a frat initiation prank and unwittingly release creepy-crawly aliens is an absolute masterpiece. It has all the elements of a quality guy flick: violence, gratuitous shower scenes, and a "Revenge of the Nerd" scenario in which the nerds prevail. To top it all off, it has some hilarious lines, including the now famous one spoken by a cop to a sorority house after the aliens turn their boyfriends into zombies: "Well girls, we've got good news and bad news. The good news is, your dates are here. The bad news is they're dead." A work of B-Movie art all men can love.

7) "Ronin" - This largely ignored action flick from 1998 is a fantastic film tailor-made for men. It revolves around a group of mercenaries hired to capture a mysterious suitcase. That is just the beginning to a thrilling action film featuring an excellent, mostly male, cast led by Robert DeNiro. There is very little sentimentality wasted as the professionals in this film go about their business. The highlights are two absolutely spectacular car chases that will have you yearning for a sports car and an empty stretch of road. With actors such as Jean Reno and Jonathan Pryce backing up DeNiro, you will be delighted and surprised by this terrific action flick.

6) "Where Eagles Dare" - What a movie! "Where Eagles Dare" falls in the best tradition of classic WWII war movies. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood lead an allied raid on a German castle on top of a mountain. The film is stereotypical, shallow, and action-packed -- and I mean all of those in a good way! Just when you think this film is getting boring, someone starts shooting a machine gun, and plenty of Nazis are mowed down or blown up by grenades. The film's climactic action scene, on top of a cable car, makes you yearn for the days when war flix weren't just there to teach you a lesson.

5) "Manhunter" - So few people realize that "Silence of the Lambs" was a sequel, but indeed it was the second in a series of novels by Thomas Harris, the first being "Red Dragon" which also featured Dr. Hannibal Lecter. Well, "Manhunter" is based on that first novel, and in its own way, it is just as good as the film adaptation of "Silence of the Lambs." Directed by Michael Mann of "Heat" fame, "Manhunter" features FBI agent Will Graham as he tries his darndest to catch a man who murders whole families once a month. The visuals and music are stylish, the film is exciting, and there is an absolutely bad-ass final confrontation set-up by an Iron Butterfly song. Overlooked by far too many, a fantastic guy flick.

4) "Gallipoli" - Even men have their sentimental side, and here is the perfect movie that allows men to shed a tear without anyone questioning their masculinity. "Gallipoli," one of Mel Gibson's earliest films, is the story of two friends from Australia who enlist in the army together during World War I. The film follows them from their days as competitive sprinters to their army training in Egypt, and finally to Gallipoli, on the Turkish peninsula. One of the greatest male bonding films ever made, Gallipoli shows what true friendship is all about, and the final shot of the movie is enough to turn even the biggest tough guy into mush.

3) "The Mad Max Series" - Arguably not that overlooked, I still feel not enough people have taken a look at the Mad Max films from the early 80s. The three post-apocalyptic flix center around one of the baddest characters ever, Mad Max, played by Mel Gibson. Mel has next to no dialogue in all of these movies, is not even that sympathetic, and somehow is a great hero. The first film, "Mad Max" is brutal as hell, but still worth checking out, if only to set up the story. The final, "Beyond Thunderdome," has a great first half, particularly the big fight in the Thunderdome ("two men enter, one man leaves!"). But the showcase is definitely the second, "The Road Warrior." This spectacular action film is the ultimate brain-candy: no plot, but lots of action and screeching car chases. I could almost smell the burning tires from my TV set.

2) "Out of Sight" - Yes, that's right, this is that movie with George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez that no one ever saw. But, if you didn't, you missed one of the best guy flix in recent memory. George Clooney plays a habitual bank robber. On his escape from prison, he encounters federal marshal Jennifer Lopez, and it wouldn't be fair to give away what happens after that. The dialogue is fantastic, the supporting cast full of fantastic male actors (Ving Rhames, Don Cheadle, and cameo by Samuel L. Jackson), and the two leads are terrific. This is particularly true for Clooney, who graduates from his sensitive girly-man role on "ER" to play a man we can all admire. The film has an incredibly unique visual style, and a fantastic soundtrack. But it also features one of the sexiest seduction and love scenes in recent memory. My only complaint: we didn't see enough of Jennifer's bountiful behind.

1) "Midnight Run" - It's hard to believe, but there are men in this country who still haven't seen "Midnight Run." This absolutely classic film starring Robert DeNiro and Charles Grodin should be passed down from generation to generation of men. The story of a bounty hunter (DeNiro) sent across country to track down an embezzling accountant who skipped out on bail (Grodin) is just the beginning for a hilarious comedy, good action film, and excellent male bonding flick. The two leads become better and better friends as the movie progresses, but they do it in such a witty, natural way, you really believe these two guys are friends. The dialogue is terrific, and rumor has it, much of it was improvised by the two performers ("I suffer from Aviaphobia, Acraphobia, and Clautraphobia." "Yeah? Well, if you don't shut up you're going to suffer from Fistaphobia."). And, I never thought a finale could be so satisfying without a single gun being fired. I don't want to say anything else, but if you haven't seen this film, go out and get it immediately.
